A 14-man Suva team proved too strong for a young Yasawa side in the second round of the Skipper Cup competition at Lautoka’s Churchill Park last night.
The Capital City boys utilised their strong forward pack to cross Yasawa’s tryline five times and won 38-23 on a fine Lautoka turf.
Yasawa replied with three tries, however, discipline proved costly for both sides as Suva winger Suliaso Vucago was red carded in the first half for foul play.
Suva’s tries were scored by flyhalf Solo Tawake, tighthead prop Inoke Ravuiwasa and outside centre Tira Wailagi while two penaltry tries were awarded by the referee.
A gutsy Yasawa Marlins team improved on its performance from last week’s loss against Nadi and scored three unconverted tries.
The cheers from Yasawa fans roared loud at the grounds and pushed their team to score tries and proved to Suva that they are a team to reckon with. Suva skipper Nemani Nagusa said Yasawa gave them a run for their money but they were content to have get the bonus point win.
The former national 7s and Fijian Drua captain said discipline was something they would need to work on before they meet Nadi in Suva next week.
Yasawa forwards coach Joeli Lotawa said despite the loss, their boys played well and improved on their game from Nadi last week.
He said they would need to improve on their scrummaging and kicks before travelling to Labasa next week to play Macuata.
