The Japanese Government will provide an additional JPY961million ($F13.6m) towards the reconstruction of the Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge.
Through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan had initially allocated JPY2.931billion ($F41m) towards the project through a grant agreement.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said in a statement that during this week’s sitting, Cabinet had endorsed the execution of the amended grant agreement with the Government of Japan.
“The Japanese Government through JICA is supporting the reconstruction of the Tamavua-i-Wai bridge in Suva, with a two-phase grant approach,” he said.
“Phase one focused on in-depth evaluation of the site with relevant engineering and construction information to ensure that the bridge will serve communities and businesses as a resilient national infrastructure against natural disaster.
“Phase Two will ensure progression and financial resourcing for the completion of the bridge construction as part of ongoing bilateral cooperation between Fiji and Japan.”
Mr Rabuka said the substantial increase in funding would primarily address unforeseen price escalations encountered during the project’s execution.
The PM said Fiji Roads Authority would be the executing agency to implement and ensure the completion of the project on behalf of the Fiji Government.
