A 50-year-old man who was sentenced to 12 years for raping and sexually assaulting a teenage girl was yesterday told by the High Court that he satisfied his disgraceful and sexual gratification when he found the victim alone in her bedroom.
The man was convicted of one count of rape and one count of sexual assault. He was sentenced in absentia by High Court judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe yesterday.
The incident took place on July 24, 2016, in Nasinu.
The accused had escaped from police custody earlier this week on the first day of his trial.
In passing sentence, Justice Rajasinghe said sexual exploitation of children within their domestic environment had become a social menace in this country which required a more constructive and effective intervention of law enforcement authorities.
He said the case was serious in nature because it involved the sexual exploitation of a young adolescent by a known person within her own domestic environment and such offenders must be dealt with, with severe and harsh punishment.
The convicted man will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years and four months.
