A man was recently jailed for 100 days for illegally selling loose cigarette rolls since 2016, according to Minister for Forest Alitia Banivalu.

Ms Banivalu said the man had also failed to pay his fine of $1500, sending a strong warning to others who break the law.

“This shows there are serious punishments for breaking the law,” she said.

The sale of loose cigarette rolls, she said, had made it significantly easier for young people to access and consume tobacco.

“Parents are worried about the sale of loose cigarette rolls. They say it makes it too easy for young people to buy and smoke, which is dangerous for their health.”

The Tobacco Control Act 2010, she said, bans the sale of single rolls, but the recent arrest proves that some continue to ignore the law.

She said the joint action by the Fiji Police Force and the Tobacco Enforcement Unit demonstrated the Government’s determination to protect communities.

“This case is a reminder that there are serious punishments for those who break the law. We must all help protect our families.”

She called on the public to take responsibility and report offenders.

“If you see loose cigarette rolls being sold, please report it immediately to the Tobacco Enforcement Unit on 3314988. Together, we can keep our children safe and healthy.”
