The principal archivist of the National Archives of Fiji, Timoci Balenaivalu, has outlined key priorities and expectations for funding allocation to bolster the institution’s capacity and services.
According to Mr Balenaivalu, last year the National Archives received about $500,000.
He said the boost was strategically utilised to expand the institution’s human resources, facilitating the recruitment of six additional employees.
“That budget helped us secure more space for another six employees. Now, we’re hoping we are given a piece of the budget to assist our IT side,” he said.
Mr Balenaivalu said strengthening their IT infrastructure would not only streamline archival processes ,but also improve accessibility to historical records through digital platforms.
“As part of our digitisation agenda, we are eager to advance our website in terms of development,” he said, adding the initiative would align with the institution’s commitment to making historical information more accessible.
He said beyond human resources and IT infrastructure, the National Archives acknowledged the importance of upholding archival standards and addressing technical challenges.
Mr Baleinaivalu said funding was also being sought to lift standards in archival preservation and management, ensuring the integrity and longevity of Fiji’s archival heritage.
“That is an area we also are prioritising in terms of the budget, so people can better access information.
“We understand that the Government might have competing priorities, so we are thankful for whatever funding we receive.”
