THE Fiji Women in Sports Commission (WISC) continues to promote leadership for women in sporting organisations.

This was revealed on Tuesday during the WISC fourth coaching clinic at Yat Sen Secondary School ground in Flagstaff, Suva.

The clinic, conducted by former Flying Fijian Seremaia Bai, was attended by female students from different racial backgrounds.

“We are trying to promote leadership in women in sporting organisation by teaching them some values and life skills that can be utilised in the development of sports,” said Bai.

“I know that some of the schools are very academic and they will not allow students to take part in sports. We are trying to teach girls to be healthy minded, be good academically and be active in sports. “These are the breaking barriers because sports are for everyone. Who knows they might be future Fijiana reps.”

Bai said rugby was one of the sports being used to inspire young people.

“We want to ensure that no one is left behind. We are trying to engage young people because sports is multicultural and multiracial.”

Commission chair Hamidan Bibi said WISC had been working with FASANOC, Ministry of Women, Ministry of Education, Fiji National Sports Commission and other bodies in the campaign.

“Rugby and hockey are used as teaser sports to help generate interest among Year 10 and Year 11 girls,” Bibi said.

“Engaging in sports aims to provide sustainable benefits, including helping reduce NCDs, build self confidence and help build socialisation.”

WISC has conducted clinics with students at Rishkul College in Nasinu and Jai Narayan College in Suva. Schools that participated in Tuesday’s clinic were Yat Sen Secondary, Saraswati College, Rishkul College and Jai Narayan College.
