Women in military seminar

THE Pacific Military Women and Defence seminar held in Suva yesterday has been marked as a successful one.

Eighteen female military officers from Papua New Guinea, Tonga, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji as well as academics, UN Women representative and interested parties in women, peace and security took part in the seminar held at the NZ High Commissioner’s residence.

New Zealand Defence Force adviser Flight Lieutenant Libby Reardon, who hosted the event, said the seminar would now become an annual event.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade New Zealand have shown financial support towards the event and we intend to have a similar event every year. Papua New Guinea has shown interest in leading next year’s event,” she said.

“Tomorrow (today) is going to be a closed session. We will be discussing about our strategic plan, something similar to what the Pacific Police Forces have,” she added.

She said the seminar was a perfect opportunity for the pacific agencies to come together as one network.
