Wellington Phoenix midfield sensation Cam Devlin open to extending his stay at the club

Cam Devlin believes moving to Wellington was the best thing that ever happened to him, as far as his football career is concerned.

He didn’t know what to expect when he left Sydney FC in 2019, but once the midfielder was handed a place in the Wellington Phoenix’s starting lineup that December, he quickly became one of their most valuable players.

Playing at the base of midfield, the 22-year-old has won plenty of admirers for his relentless approach, which has him popping up everywhere on the pitch and winning plenty of tackles and interceptions.

So it is somewhat strange that he was allowed to enter the last six months of his two-year contract – the point at which other clubs can talk to him – without being offered an extension by the Phoenix.

Devlin said “to be honest, no, not yet,” when asked if there had been any talk of his extending his stay, ahead of their second match this season, last weekend’s draw with Macarthur FC.

“But I feel like that’s for a lot of reasons,” he added.

“Obviously there’s a lot going on in terms of us moving countries and there’s a lot of background things going on which obviously come first because just getting us on the pitch for now is the most important thing.

“I’m not worried about [coming off contract] at the moment – the only way I’m obviously going to earn that contract or get spoken to in a positive way is if I perform again.”
