In a bid to curb incidents of overloading and reduce road infrastructure damage, the LTA opened its Karavi Weighbridge Station in Ba yesterday.

The opening of the $3.4million project was officiated by Public Works and Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau.

Ro Filipe said the new facility demonstrated the Government’s commitment to compliance and safety.

“There were changes in terms of the road safety committee,” Ro Filipe said.

“Road safety as it was before, was not there in the past five or ten years.

“So, I asked the LTA board to relook at that.

“And this facility is an aspect of it in terms of overloading.”

Ro Filipe said the 50-tonne weighbridge would stimulate economic activity in the Western Division.

“We are concerned about some of the roads here in the interior.

“We repair the roads but some activities are going on in terms of quarrying and mining which we need to look into, such as carting gravel, in terms of sustainable roads.”

The construction of the project commenced in September 2021.
