Fiji’s Ministry of Waterways has completed coastal protection works for Namuana Village on Kadavu with the construction of 250 metres of seawall.

Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy said the same had also been done for Tavuki District School – a 300m seawall worth $1.2million.

He said for the next financial year, the ministry had earmarked nature-based seawall coastal protection works for Wailevu Village – 300m with an approximate cost of $45,000; and Namuana Village rock boulders extension of 150m with an approximate cost of $30,000.

“For the next financial year, Wailevu Village and Namuana Village are on our list, of course subject to funding when we look at the next budget,” Mr Reddy said in parliament last week.

“… But in addition to these two, we also have requests for Nasau Village – 300m; Richmond High School – 410m; Nabukelevu Primary School – 360m; Nasegai Village – 400m; Levuka Village – 600m; Levuka-i-Yale Village – 280m; Dravuwalu Village – 160m; Muani Village – 300m; Rakiraki Village – 300m; and Vabea Village – 300m.

“This accumulates to a total length of 3.4km of coastal protection walls that needs to be done in Kadavu Island.”
