WATER Authority of Fiji (WAF) chief executive officer Seru Soderberg was at the European Union Pacific Business Forum to connect with potential financiers and partners to address the critical challenges facing Fiji’s water infrastructure.
Mr Soderberg said much of the focus was on securing support for the implementation of the Water Sector Strategy 2050, a comprehensive plan designed to improve water services and build a more resilient system for the future.
He said the strategy, which is a key part of WAF’s long-term vision, requires significant investment and collaborative effort to succeed.
During the forum, Mr Soderberg emphasised the authority’s objective of meeting with key stakeholders to secure the necessary backing.
“So from this EU Business Forum, what we’re basically hoping to get is just make some connections with the potential finances and partners, noting that we have a water sector strategy, 2050 which we need to implement over the next 27 years, and just looking for opportunity to make connections with the potential manufacturers or also potential business partners to help build the infrastructure we have in Fiji and to basically improve services,” Mr Soderberg said.
He said a key issue for WAF was the need to incorporate climate change resilience into its infrastructure.
“That’s one of our biggest challenges as a service provider in the country, a lot of our infrastructure are not climate resilient.
“The forum provides a platform to explore solutions to this issue, as well as to find new technologies and financing opportunities.”
Mr Soderberg said the event was a timely opportunity to tackle those issues head-on.
“This is an opportunity to see what is available out there, what technology is available, what financing opportunities out there that we can tap into to be able to build up our infrastructure and provide more reliable services.”
