IT was an emotional win for senior girls 400 metres gold medallist Virisine Macuku of Waidina Secondary School in Naitasiri.

The 18-year-old surprised the crowd when she beat her Adi Cakobau School opponent in the last 100 metres of the race to win gold. Macuku ran a time of 1 minute and 4 seconds.

Macuku said beating one of the giant schools in the finals would be a memory cherished.

“I could not believe I won this race as I was expecting the ACS girl to win. I am so happy and over the moon for this win and I cannot wait to compete in the Coca-Cola Games,” said Macuku.

She said she was always thankful to her coach, parents and school for believing in her despite difficulties faced.

“It had been a difficult week of preparation, we usually train along the road because the ground is not in good condition and is usually muddy.

“I also did not have enough time to train because I had to help my mum look after the young siblings every morning and afternoon but I am thankful for this win,” said Macuku after her win.
