NEWCOMERS Vesida volleyball team quickly made a significant impact in the Extra Supermarket Central Community games over the weekend after beating Vunivivi Hills 15-9 in a thrilling women’s final on Saturday.

Head coach Maika Kini said the team started with a women’s team last year under the Mid Central Volleyball Association, but this year they joined the Nasinu Volleyball Association.

The decision to join Nasinu was made in an effort to revive the once champion team that had been dormant for over a decade.

“The Vesida volleyball team is based at the Vesida Housing, located four miles from Suva, and is committed to using sports as a means of keeping youth engaged and away from criminal activities,” said Kini.

“Through sports, the team aims to not only provide opportunities for the youth to secure jobs but also to ultimately eliminate unemployment in the Vesinda community.

“The team has collaborated closely with various organisations such as the community police, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and Fiji Sports Council to achieve their goals.”

In addition to volleyball, the team has expanded their court to accommodate other sports such as netball, rugby, badminton, and futsal, with the aim of catering to the diverse interests of the youth in the community.

By providing a range of sporting opportunities, the team hopes to create well-rounded individuals and to continue making a positive impact on the Vesida community.
