Upgrading and maintaining infrastructure is a key component the Ministry of Public Works will be looking at in terms of water infrastructure.

Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services Ro Filipe Tuisawau made this comment during his visit of the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) Nasealevu Intake in Macuata on Vanua Levu yesterday.

Ro Filipe said the upgrading of the water infrastructure was something they had been discussing with development partners such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB), European Union, Australia and others.

He said the intake was one of WAF’s key infrastructures because it catered for the Labasa Town population, as well as nearby communities and villages.

He noted the site visit was important to him as line Minister so he could understand the difficulties faced by the authority in managing the site and supplying water to the people.

“This is one of the key infrastructures and it took us about one and half hours to get here – it is not a proper road but a dirt track, and I really appreciate coming here because I now understand the difficulties faced by Water Authority in managing the water infrastructure and in getting water to the people,” Ro Filipe said.

“It is a basic human right but it is a not an easy job, and WAF and my ministry face huge challenges in that regard.

“So as you can see, it is an impressive site, it is not really a picnic area but it is very critical in the Labasa urban infrastructure, and for the industries around this area – not only that but as people of Macuata.”
