As the nation prepares for the next general election, eight districts in the interior of Naitasiri are still waiting for Government to fulfil some of its “unkept development
promises” made between 2016 to 2018.

The issue was raised by the chairman of Bose Vanua – Naitasiri, Ratu Timoci Rokobukete during a recent talanoa session with Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama at Nairukuruku Village in the district of Matailobau, Naitasiri.

In 2016, he said a team from the Ministry of Waterways did a survey in the villages of Saumakia, Lutu, Nakorovatu and Vunidawa after requests were made for the dredging of waterways.

Sa varau caka qo na veidigidigi, da sega ni kila de sa na veisau na matanitu, dou sa na sega beka kina, se dou na wini tale, keitou se wawa tiko ga qo mai na 2016 (Elections will be held soon, maybe Government will change and your Government will be no longer in power or maybe you will win again, here we are still waiting since 2016),” Mr Rokobukete said in the iTaukei language.

In another incident, Mr Rokobukete said a Government MP visited Vunidawa Government Station in 2018 where he was hosted to a big feast.

He said the Government MP then promised that he was going to provide a digger for eight districts so they could develop their villages because the only digger available to them was stationed at Lomaivuna, which was quite far.

Se bera ga ni dua na ka e macala mai na 2018 me yacova mai qo me baleta neitou digger (We are still waiting for the digger promised to us since 2018).”

Another villager of Nawaisomo said Mr Bainimarama had made a promise that he would fix the teachers’ quarters while opening the village school.

The villager said they were told by Government officials at the Vunidawa Government Station that the matter had not reached the PM’s office.

Mr Bainimarama then referred Commissioner Central Josefa Navuku to respond to the grievances.

In response, Mr Navuku said some of those issues were highlighted during the district council meetings.

He said they had received 15 issues from villagers and that they would need time to sort them out.

He also apologised to villagers about the delay.
