KATOWICE, 03 DECEMBER 2018 (PIDF) – Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) was today officially approved by the UNFCCC with an Observer status under the category of an Intergovermental organization (IGO) following an official application made in 2017.

The announcement was made during the third item on the Agenda at the opening of COP24.

Organisations with observer status are called Observer Organisations. There are three categories of observer organisations –

  1. a) United Nations System and its Specialised Agencies
  2. b) intergovernmental organisations (IGOs) and
  3. c) non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

IGOs and NGOs go through a review process before being admitted as observers by the Conference Of Parties.

“We take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to UNFCCC for recognising the role that PIDF plays within the Pacific and granting us a Observer status,” a statement from PIDF said.
