Tuvalu PM sends SOS

THE Prime Minister of Tuvalu Enele Sopoaga has sent out a strong message to the President of France François Hollande ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP 21) meeting in December.

Mr Sopoaga says it is vital for France to know that the water is already lapping on the doorsteps of small Pacific Island countries such as Tuvalu.

With Tuvalu being one of the worst affected countries by climate change, Mr Sopoaga is pleading for next month COP 21 summit to be a success.

“I ask that you pass on the message to the President of France to try his best, failure is not an option for the world on climate change, and ambassador please kindly pass that message to all your leaders in Paris, pass the message that the water is already flapping on every Tuvaluan house and every low lying islands in the Pacific,” he said.

Meanwhile, convincing world leaders to agree to legally binding agreements to cut down carbon emissions won’t be easy.

The Pacific Island Development Forum is preparing for a big fight at a global climate change conference in Paris France in December.

PIDF climate change adviser Dr Mahendra Kumar says some countries are energy dependent, others have millions invested in coal mines and still others have to battle social issues like poverty. “Every country will negotiate with its own specific national situation in mind. Even within the developing countries there are so many sectional interests.
