A routine shopping trip turned into a nightmare for a Samabula family after they found themselves in the middle of an armed robbery at Alison Supermarket in Laucala Beach, Suva, on Monday.
Sushmita Narayan and her parents were at the supermarket when masked intruders wielding cane knives broke in.
The family is still shaken after the incident and Ms Narayan told this newspaper that they initially did not know what was happening.
“We went to buy meat, so my father was standing near the butcher and mum and I went over to join him,” she said.
“At first, when we heard the cashier shout, we thought it was a joke and that it was one of the employees playing a trick,” Ms Narayan said.
She said they heard a bottle being thrown and soon realised things were serious.
“The man, who was wearing the mask, saw us and came over. He put the knife on my neck and tried to take my bag from me. I didn’t let go, but my father told me to just give my bag to him.
“Soon after, they left and when we went outside, everything was gone. My bag had my phone, money, and car keys. Everything was gone.”
