Third cane payment – Canefarmers to receive $11 per tonne today

CANEFARMERS will receive a third cane payment of $11 per tonne today, bringing their 2019 total share of proceeds to $61.53 against $85 per tonne guaranteed by Government.

Under the Sugar Master Award, the Fiji Sugar Corporation takes 30 per cent of proceeds from the sale of raw sugar and growers receive 70 per cent.

The Sugar Industry Tribunal announced that growers’ share of proceeds was about $79 million.

The $11 per tonne payment was certified by the tribunal, Devanesh Sharma.

Registrar of the tribunal, Timothy Brown, had also clarified on when the third cane payment should be made, after calls by industry stakeholders that payment must be done by March 31 each year.

“It is clear the Master Award does not specify when a third cane payment should be made, although it has been the practice in the past that the third cane payment is made on or before 31st March each year,” he said.
