IT’S going to be a David and Goliath battle as anticipation builds for the Vodafone Super Deans under-18 competition final today.

The stage is set for the most-followed schools rugby event of the year as defending champion Queen Victoria School will lock horns with Nasinu Secondary School on who takes the Deans Trophy this year.

NSS U18 head coach Mika Yasiyasi has drawn on the infamous biblical battle between David and Goliath to describe their view of the final.

Playing at this level for the first time after 12 years, Yasiyasi says his young men are coming in as the David of the final, taking on QVS, a school regarded to be a giant of secondary schools’ rugby.

“Before we enter the field, I would always tell the boys that we are the David of whatever Goliath or whichever team we will meet.

“We will remain as the David in this final, and we will focus on our team bond that gives us strengths.” Yasiyasi said.

The final may be a familiar territory for QVS, but they are wary of the sling and stone of their opponent.

“Nasinu is a tough one because they have been undefeated so far. They deserve to be in the final, they deserve to challenge the Deans Trophy, and we hope that this week, it will be a bigger and better match, and we are looking forward to it,” QVS head coach Josaia Waiwalu said.

Nasinu is out to create a new legacy for their school while QVS is out to maintain their historic patrimony of the Deans trophy which started in 1939.

All this will be determined today when they meet for the last dance at 5.30pm at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
