The Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka first acknowledged the Vanua o Nadonumai—na gone turaga na Tui Suva—and the elders, as traditional owners of the land at the celebration of the 170 Years of Chinese Settlement in Fiji, last Saturday.

He warmly welcomed the gathering of Fijians of Chinese descent who had come from around the country to celebrate two major milestones — the 170th anniversary of the first Chinese settlers’ arrival in Fiji and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Fiji and China.

Mr Rabuka highlighted the diversity of the Chinese community in the country, represented by farmers, business groups, women’s organisations, schools, and cultural associations at Ratu Sukuna Park.

“Your families have been part of Fiji’s story for generations — building businesses, creating livelihoods and contributing to our economy, our culture and our community,” he said.

“You have been the mainstay of our society, particularly the business side of things. “I am delighted to see banners representing Chinese farmers, provincial and village groups, women’s organisations, business communities, schools, sporting clubs, the Fiji Chinese Fusion Group, and other associations.”

Mr Rabuka said this unity and pride reflected the community’s deep roots and invaluable contributions to Fiji’s social, cultural, and economic progress.

He also paid tribute to prominent Chinese-Fijian families like the Houng Lees, Yees, Seetos, and Chans, acknowledging their role in shaping Fiji’s development.

He recalled the arrival of Moy Bak Ling, the first recorded Chinese settler in 1855, and honoured the courage of the early Chinese migrants who established livelihoods in Fiji’s rural and maritime areas.

He praised the enduring values of hard work, loyalty, harmony, and respect for family that continue to guide Chinese-Fijians seven generations later.

He said these values have been vital in shaping Fiji’s growth through contributions in business, education, health, infrastructure, and politics.

Turning to diplomatic relations, Mr Rabuka also reflected on 50 years of friendship between Fiji and China, founded on mutual respect, equality, and non-interference.

He commended China’s growing role as one of Fiji’s key trading partners and highlighted joint achievements under the Belt and Road Initiative, which has supported infrastructure, agriculture, and technology projects benefiting thousands of Fijians.

He also celebrated the flourishing people-to-people ties — cultural exchanges, medical aid, scholarships, and sister-city partnerships — that have deepened mutual understanding and cooperation.

“The story of the Chinese in Fiji is one of courage, perseverance, and partnership,” he said.

“From humble beginnings as traders and farmers to the leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals we see today – your journey mirrors Fiji’s own story of resilience and renewal.”

Mr Rabuka mentioned that both nations have supported each other in times of global crisis, strengthening their solidarity and shared vision for prosperity.

Looking ahead, he reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to expanding collaboration with China in trade, investment, and climate resilience.

He emphasised that the Fiji–China partnership embodies shared prosperity, sustainable progress, and respect.

“Let us continue to work side by side – for peace, for development, and for the wellbeing of all our people.”

“May this golden era of Fiji–China friendship shine ever brighter in the years ahead,” he concluded.
