TC Gita: Fijians advised to prepare

Update: 7:42PM MEMBERS of the public are advised to ensure their preparedness for the possible hit of Tropical Cyclone Gita.

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) today stated TC Gita may pass close to the south of Fiji in the next few days from Tongan waters.

The weatherman has forecast that TC Gita at this stage posed no direct threat to Fiji.

However, it stated that given that cyclone path could defy forecasted tracks, it is important to remain prepared at all times.

As precautionary acts of preparedness, the NDMO has urged people to ensure the strength of their rooftops and walls, to trim treetops and branches that may pose a danger to their property, secure loose material that could be blown easily by strong winds and cause injury or damage to property, know their nearest evacuation centre or higher grounds in case of storm surges or flooding, and to know their emergency contacts.

Families are also urged to prepare emergency kits including a portable battery-powered radio, a torch, spare batteries, canned food, and clean water containers and a first aid kit.
