Shifting the blame to the previous administration will not benefit the sugar industry, says Ba farmer Arvind Singh.

“We want to know what the plan is within three years,” he said.

“What plan has the minister drawn? What is his plan to put the sugar industry on track rather than blaming?”

Mr Singh emphasised the need for impartiality and transparency.

“What did he achieve for the sugar industry? He made several trips overseas – that’s another concern for the farmers.”

Mr Singh called on Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to form an independent committee to conduct a survey on the sugar industry.

“He (Mr Rabuka) is not getting a clear picture from his own sugar minister. So, I am also disappointed with the Prime Minister for defending the minister because this will never help the industry.”

Mr Singh claimed he received feedback from other farmers following his heated exchange with Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh last week at the ‘Meet the Press’ event in Ba.

“I am very happy that no farmer has said a word against me. They all praised me, they all thanked me, I have had calls, I have lots of comments on Facebook.

“I got a call from someone who said I had raised a very sensible issue regarding the sugar industry. So, people want the sugar industry to get back on track.”
