Staying in the top 8 of the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition will be the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua’s goal for seasons to come.
After celebrating the team’s success at an awards ceremony in Denarau, Nadi, this week, head coach Mick Byrne said they were focused on capitalising on the success they’ve had this year.
“We need to build off of this year,” he said.
“Now that we are in the top 8, we need to make sure that is where we stay now.”
He said developing a successful program to ensure their appearances in the playoffs was an important part of their progress in the competition.
“I think the key to success is not always seen as winning the title but if you are a team that continually makes the finals, then probably your program is successful.
“Along the way if you are continually playing in the finals and you play a good year and you get a home quarter-final that will be something we would like to see.
“And ultimately, every year that you are making the finals you have a successful program.”
He said once teams reached the quarter-finals, each game became unpredictable.
“As we know things happen in finals. The Chiefs knocked over the Reds last week and this weekend we have the four top sides that playing, which is great but anything can happen once you make the finals.
“For us, our mark of success is we will be making finals every year we play Super Rugby.”
The team bowed out of the competition last Saturday in Christchurch in their first-ever quarter-final appearance against the defending champions, Crusaders.
