South Indians celebrate

THE Sadhu Kuppuswamy Day celebration ended on a high note yesterday with about 200 people attending the event held at Suva Sangam High School in Suva.

The festival was established in Fiji to promote the culture and language of South Indian indentured labourers in Fiji.

Chief guest and Minister for Local Government, Environment, Housing, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Kumar says the celebration marks the life of Sadhu Kuppuswamy, the man who in 1926, founded the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam.

Mr Kumar said Sadhuji’s aim was to unite the South Indians in Fiji so that their culture could be preserved and promoted.

“He spent his time in the propagation of education moving from house to house inspiring the South Indians to build their schools and temples to preserve their language and culture,” Mr Kumar said.

TISI Sangam president Sadasivan Naicker said the yearly celebration was something the Sangam community looks forward to every year.

He said the day was marked by all Sangam institutions around Fiji.

Mr Naicker said Sadhu Kuppuswamy was seen as a hero and a saint.
