The Social Democratic Liberal Party has clarified as to why three board members were banned from attending the party’s management board meeting last Friday, February 26, 2021.
The three are Adi Litia Qionibaravi, Ratu Tevita Komaisavai and Gilbert Vakalalabure.
In a statement SODELPA General Secretary, Emele Duituturaga stated “The Secretariat confirms obtaining a leaked email addressed to numerous individuals, some of whom are financial and Board members of SODELPA with regards to their alleged involvement in the collection of signatures for the registration of a proposed political party.
“Considering that, the Party President Ratu Epenisa Cakobau issued a written communication to Party members implicated in the leaked email to recuse themselves from attending the Board Meeting and instead send their alternate Board Members.
“The decision taken by the Party President was exercised to protect the Party. Section 15 of the Political Parties Act 2013 clearly states that it is an offence for a person to be a member or an office holder of more than one proposed political party or political party registered under the Act at the same time.
“It is the responsibility of the Party Executives to ensure that SODELPA is compliant with the Act and the decision taken was in the best interest of the Party.
“The SODELPA Secretariat also clarifies that the decision was made internally, and no reference made to the Registrar of Political Parties. News reports suggesting that the Registrar was involved in the SODELPA decision was false and misleading.
“The Secretariat will inform Party members concerned of the resolution of the Board Meeting held last Friday.”
