Skipper in doubt

A cloud of doubt surrounds the availability of KBL Saru Dragons skipper Waisea Bati for the Vodafone Cup grand final against Fair Trade Makoi Bulldogs at Churchill Park in Lautoka this Saturday.

This is after the prop twisted his ankle in the semi-final against the Dee Cees Nadera Panthers last week. Dragons coach Tevita Volavola said Bati was recovering from the injury and would have to go through a fitness test.

Volavola said an assessment would be made on Friday.

“Waisea has been inspiration throughout the season,” he said.

“Hopefully he will recover in time for the big match.”

The Dragons played in the grand finals in 2010 and last year.

On both occasions the side went down to the Sabeto Roosters after holding the advantage at halftime.

This season, the Dragons defeated the Bulldogs twice.

Volavola said in the second match they scored in the last minute to record victory.

“When it comes to grand finals then it becomes anyone’s game.

“The Bulldogs play an open pattern of rugby which is similar to us. Possession will be the key factor in the game.

“We have been working on our attacking pattern and will come out firing.

“The team has failed twice in the grand finals previously so we hope to turn things around this time.”

The Bulldogs won the grand final in 2012.
