THE team captains of the 2019 Skipper Cup rugby competition are geared up for an epic season of provincial rugby this weekend after the major sponsor CJ Patel granted the Fiji Rugby Union $551,250 to assist the teams in the competition.

Team captains of the eight provincial teams in the major union with their under-19 and women’s captains gathered at Albert Park in Suva yesterday to launch the country’s biggest and renowned competition that has been a pathway for the national Fiji 7s and 15s reps and also for the overseas-based Fijian players.

The FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor acknowledged the sponsors for their support and making it possible for the unions to enjoy the season.

“I would like to thank CJ Patel group for being by Fiji Rugby Union’s side when it comes to a competition that is the pinnacle for domestic rugby in the country and or contributing over $500,000 towards the operation of the Skipper Cup that includes union grants, playing kit provisions and ball supply,” said O’Connor.

“Part of the grant will be utilised by Fiji Rugby Union to contract the head coaches, and the assisting coaches, the medical officers, team managers and the 25 registered players.”

CJ Patel group marketing manager Ashwin Prasad said the Skipper Cup competition had been a transforming figure for a rugby player.

“We are committed to the continuous support for the development and improvement in standard and unearthing the raw talents that Fiji rugby needs,” said Prasad.

Meanwhile, the competition kicks off tomorrow at various venues across the mainland with the under-19 games starting at 11am, followed by the women’s rugby at 1pm and the main competition at 3pm.
