Sharks visit Fiji for friendly matches

THE Sharks in Paradise hockey team is currently touring the country for its Fiji tour which began in Lautoka earlier this week.

Consisting of hockey lovers and enthusiasts, the 18-member squad along with family members have been participating in a series of friendly matches in Lautoka, Rakiraki and last night in Suva at the National Hockey Centre.

“We have people from all over Australia who have been invited to play in this team,” said coach and team captain Ross Mclellan.

The club, which is more than 55 years old, has players from New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Queensland with the average age at 60 years old.

“We are all hockey lovers and are here to add a little boost to Fiji Hockey.”

The “Sharkies” toured New Zealand in 2017, Australia last year and have now come to Fiji this year.

Mclennan said the tour had been planned two years ago with the hopes of giving to the hockey community in Fiji as well as play some great games against Fijian counterparts.

Showcasing players of all ages, the Sharks also feature 89-year-old Ken Mclellan and 15-year-old Riley Harwood who both feature prominently for the team.
