Politics in Fiji thrives on rumours of fear and feared rumours, says Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Inia Seruiratu.

He made the comment yesterday in support of the amendment iTaukei Land Trust Act 1940 that was later passed by Parliament.

“Where are these fears coming from, from us politicians when we are not revealing the truth to the people,” Mr Seruiratu said.

He said parliamentarians had the responsibility to inform the people and tell them the truth.

“Are we going to allow this to continue. We have a responsibility to inform our people.”

He said people were being used by politicians.

“How many of those people that signed the petitions have seen the Bill itself let alone understand the amendments are for.”

Mr Seruiratu said the TLTB as trustees had an obligation to look after the landowners.
