Leader of Opposition Inia Seruiratu has called for enhanced parliamentary oversight of the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), recommending that the company report quarterly to a committee of Parliament rather than waiting for its annual report.

Speaking during parliamentary debate last Thursday on Government’s financial guarantee for FSC, Mr Seruiratu said the creation of a special parliamentary committee is welcome, but urged that the oversight go further.

“When we are giving this guarantee, FSC should know we cannot wait for the annual report,” he said.

“Maybe quarterly reporting to the Public Accounts Committee or the Economic Affairs Committee would allow Parliament to stay updated on progress, particularly regarding cane price equalisation.”

He stressed that proactive oversight would ensure accountability, reduce delays in decision-making, and align FSC’s operations with good governance and financial best practices.

“This would give Parliament greater satisfaction and prevent reactive decisions at the last minute when it’s too late,” he added.
