The officer-in-charge of Tavua and Vatukoula police stations and the station officer of Vatukoula Police Station are among eight officers who have been charged for the alleged assault on two brothers in Tavua.
Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde yesterday sanctioned 24 charges on the eight who will be produced in the Tavua Magistrates Court today.
They are alleged to have assaulted Samisoni Bilivalu and Meleti Balei in a case of alleged cattle theft in Natolevu, Tavua on March 26.
OC Tavua ASP Samuela Vuci and station officer of Vatukoula Police Station, Insp Dinesh Chand have been charged alongside officers Emosi Tagicakivanua, Vishwam Baran, Alivereti Sukamanu, Nemani Lutumailgai, Viliame Nagatalevu and Jese Marovia.
The charges consist of assault causing actual bodily harm, act intended to cause grievous bodily harm and aiding and abetting assault causing actual bodily harm.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has also sanctioned charges of aiding and abetting acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and common assault.
Charges of giving a false statement on oath, conspiracy to defeat justice, and interference with witnesses have also been laid on the officers.
