Semi Valemei is gearing up to make his return to the Vodafone Fiji Bati in the upcoming Pacific Championship, and this occasion holds extra significance for him.
For the first time, Valemei’s family will be there to watch him play on the international stage.
“This time, it’s more than special because my parents and all my siblings will be watching the game,” he shared.
“The last time they saw me play was back in our village when I was playing 7s.”
The 23-year-old winger, who currently represents the Canberra Raiders in the NRL, previously played for the Fiji Bati during the 2022 Rugby League World Cup.
“This isn’t my first time with the national rugby league team,” he noted.
Valemei was surprised to be selected for the Fiji Bati, especially considering the talented wings available.
“I’m really grateful to have been chosen to play for the national side this year, given the number of talented Fijian wings.”
The Bati side visited Valemei’s village in Navidamu, Seaqaqa.
When asked about the possibility of bringing the team to his village, he described it as a memorable experience.
“The people back home loved it. They adored the boys. They’ve only seen them on television, so seeing them in person was truly special.”
He confirmed he is contracted with the Cowboys for next year. “I’m going to do my best to continue playing rugby league,” he said.
Valemei’s advice for aspiring young players is simple: “Never give up and keep chasing your dreams.”
The Bati takes on the Papua New Guinea Kumuls at 8.10pm at HFC Bank Stadium this Saturday.
