Vunimono High School in Nausori had a Diwali Mela Night last week to raise funds for their Riverside Bure Project.
Not only did the school get a chance to celebrate the festival of lights it also received over $100,000 in cash and kind towards their project.
Vunimono High School principal, Bijen Singh said their initial target for the project was $15,000 to $20,000.
“We were hoping to only build three or four bure, now we are targeting a total of 50 bure from what has been raised,” he said.
“So far, nine bure units are sponsored so it’s quite heartwarming to see the huge amount of support pouring in towards the school project.”
He said they are grateful for all the support, especially those that have stepped in to assist with the project.
“Currently the students don’t have the facility to use in the school and often sit on the ground during their breaks,” he said.
The bure will be used by the students during recess, lunch and study periods – it can also be used for other recreational activities that the students will participate in.
The Vunimono Community Hall was jam-packed as many turned up to enjoy the celebration of Diwali through performances from students.
The items performed by the students varied from traditional Indian dances to island dances – showcasing the diverse rich cultures nurtured at the school.
Also there to support the cause were the young students of Vunimono Primary School that participated in the Diwali Mela Night with the guidance of their teachers.
The construction work for the bure is expected to start in December.
