SINCE 1926, the TISI Sangam has established 22 primary schools, five secondary schools and one tertiary institution (The Sangam College of Nursing in Labasa).
This was highlighted in a public lecture delivered by Mr Amraiya Naidu, a former permanent secretary of education at the University of the Pacific on Wednesday night.
The lecture was in commemoration of Sadhu Kuppuswamy, the founder of the TISI Sangam and it was jointly organised by Sangam, the School of Education, Faculty of Arts, Law and Education (FALE) and the School of Government, Development and International Affairs, Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE).
Mr Naidu maintained that examination in schools, and especially public examinations were pivotal to measure what was happening in schools. He said even though there was a period when public examinations had been phased out, the Sangam centrally prepared and administered examination papers for subjects taught in its secondary schools. TISI Sangam will continue to do this in the future.
Mr Naidu said the College of Nursing had been a major initiative of the 10-year-old organisation.
“It has graduated 443 qualified nurses, and who because of their quality are all employed, 30 abroad in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada,” he said.
