Sailing wants eight for PNG

SAILING is looking at the approval of the eight names submitted to Team Fiji as the athletes gear up for the Pacific Games.

Eight names were given for approval which include Charlotte Taylor and Naomi Waqalevu for women’s laser, Michael Chand and Peter Thaggard for men’s laser while Shayne Brodie, Torika Brodie, Epeli Droma and Saimoni Nauru will compete in the Hobie 16.

Fiji Yachting Association president said the team were always trying to improve themselves.

“It is the Pacific Games and we know that things would be very tough.

“A large number of experienced sailors from the region will be in Papua New Guinea,” he said.

“For us, we are trying push ourselves to the limit and better out times or sharpen our skills so we too can get a medal in the Pacific Games.”

Shayne and Torika Brodie, fended off strong competition two years ago in the Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna, won gold medal.

The two are hoping to move a level up in PNG. The team will be without seasoned campaigner Graham Southwick who is recovering after surgery.

Meanwhile the Pacific Games Organising Committee have moved the sailing competition to the Port Moresby’s Fairfax Harbour from its original location of Gabitu.

The PGOC conducted its tests and said the water quality was not an issue.

They said safety for athletes was paramount and therefore testing for all water sports had been conducted to ensure the waters are safe.
