EMERGENCY restoration works on the Nailawa crossing in Tailevu have been completed, restoring access for hundreds of residents after the approach was washed away during the recent heavy rainfall.
The update followed questions to Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau, regarding the hardship faced by villagers who were forced to wade through waist-deep water for days.
Ro Filipe said work along the Dawasamu corridor had progressed, and he had directed the Fiji Roads Authority to ensure the section from QVS through to Dawasamu was thoroughly inspected and attended to.
He said the intention was to ensure the repairs were done properly and connected reliably to Kings Road and that assessment and strengthening works were continuing.
The FRA confirmed emergency teams were deployed soon after the approach collapsed under rising floodwaters.
In a statement, the authority said: “Emergency restoration works have commenced on the Nailawa Crossing approach in Tailevu after it was washed away during recent heavy rainfall.
“An FRA team is now working to restore safe access for the commuters,” Ro Filipe said.
FRA then issued a final confirmation that the crossing was safe to use.
“Emergency restoration works on the Nailawa Crossing approach in Tailevu have been completed, and the crossing is now open to traffic.”
The villagers said they were relieved to once again have access to the highway, schools, workplaces, and essential services after days of disruption.
