THE Sabeto Roosters were crowned the winners of the Vodafone 9s tournament at Prince Charles Park in Nadi on Saturday night.
It was an anticlimax finish to the tournament as the Cup final was not played.
This was after both the Roosters teams won their respective semi-final matches and opted to take away the winner and runner-up prize purse without breaking sweat.
In the semi-finals, Sabeto Roosters One defeated Raiwai Raiders in sudden death while Sabeto Roosters Two beat 2014 Vodafone Cup champions Saru Dragons.
The tournament unearthed some new talents with the national selectors picking several players for the Pacific Games training squad.
Fiji National Rugby League selector Joe Rabele said Raiwai was one of the most improved teams in the tournament.
He said Raiwai put on a gallant performance against Sabeto Roosters One in the semi-final.
“We have selected seven players to be part of the national training squad,” Rabele said.
“There is a lot of time to prepare the team for the regional meet but there is a lot of work to do to pick the best team.
“We hope to announce a 25 member squad in the next few days. After that the training program will start.”
The 9s format will be played during the upcoming Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.
Rabele said Fiji would be defending the gold medal.
“We won the gold medal in 2007 in Samoa,” he said.
“Training camps will be organised but the players will undergo a fitness test first.”
The Raiwai Raiders will host a 9s tournament in Suva during the Easter weekend.
