The brawl in Rewa St, Suva, on Tuesday (October 4, 2022) night is a sad reflection of the breakdown of law and order across the country, says Unity Fiji Party leader Savenaca Narube.
He said the party strongly condemned the lawlessness and violence on our streets.
“Whatever the reasons for this violence, we must put a stop to these immediately,” the former Reserve Bank of Fiji governor said.
“The people must feel safe in the streets, businesses must be secure.
“Properties must be protected, finally, the lives of people must be safeguarded at all times.”
He said police must be adequately resourced to proactively prevent violence on our streets.
“Community and church leaders also have an important role to play.
“Lastly, Government, by educating the people and being role models to our youths.”
In a statement, Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said more than 50 police officers were deployed to the scene and managed to contain the situation.
He said an incident management task force has been set up to investigate the occupants of a house of interest who were alleged to have been instigators of violent attacks against youths from Raiwai.
Mr Qiliho said police will look into the owners of the property and any unexplained wealth of those occupying the house.
