A group of retirees have committed to feeding the homeless on the streets of Lautoka on a fortnightly basis.

About 30 senior citizens, whose usual haunt was under the famous raintree in Lautoka’s central business district, formed the Vunivaivai Senior Citizen’s Group to address the homeless issue.

Group spokesman Eparama Roko said they fed 20 homeless people in the past three weeks and decided to continue because of the need on the streets.

“Whenever we meet under the vaivai tree, we would give our contributions and whatever we give at the end of the week would go towards food packs for these people,” he said.

“Most of these homeless people have nowhere to go, they have been neglected, some do not want to go to senior citizens’ homes and they prefer the streets because of the freedom they enjoy there. We are grateful that the project is rolling out well and we hope to continue. The response from them has given us the urge to continue providing food.”
