Ratu Sukuna Park will reopen on August 19.
This finalisation comes after years of delay.
In an interview yesterday, Suva City Council acting CEO and chairperson Tevita Boseiwaqa said over the past several months they had been in office, they had heard about concerns from the public and the delay had bothered them too.
“When we came in, we understood why it was late, and there were various factors,” Mr Boseiwaqa said.
“One is the attempt to change the plan, the design, with the inclusion of the cafe and when there is a change, everything takes time. It can stop or go slowly.”
He said by removing the cafe from the design, the cost to SCC was reduced from $13million to $7m.
Mr Boseiwaqa said there would be some changes in the look and feel of the park, one of which was the size as the podium was bigger compared with the last one.
Along with that would be the benches, charging ports and lights. He said fencing around the park would make it secure. He also urged members of the public to treat the park with consideration.
“Most of the infrastructure and amenities is owned or used by the public. We all have responsibilities.
“If you want to keep Sukuna Park the way it should be, so that all can enjoy, we need the SCC staff and those who come to Sukuna Park to do their part.”
