The Fiji Corrections Service is moving away from the practice of giving ranks to individuals and is now implementing ranks for specific posts.
In a statement, FCS states these changes are part of the Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE), which was approved by the Cabinet and endorsed by Parliament through the national budget provisions.
“The rank is no longer an attribute of the individual officer but is attached to the post they hold. Officers wear the rank and receive the pay associated with the post to which they are assigned,” states FCS.
“The concepts of promotion and demotion, as traditionally understood, no longer apply.”
“Movement up or down the rank structure is determined by the post an officer is transferred to, based on performance and organizational needs.”
FCS states this system prioritizes performance and competency.
“Assignments to posts are made based on an officer’s ability to fulfill the responsibilities of that position.”
“Demotion as a punitive measure through disciplinary action is redundant under the new system. Instead, performance assessments and post requirements dictate an officer’s role and rank.”
