Born and bred on a farm in Seaqaqa on Vanua Levu, young Alena Mataika Raiserenivosa has developed a keen passion for the promotion and development of sustainable Agriculture.
Encouraged by family and former school teachers, the 19-year-old decided to pursue her passion to further her knowledge in this field by enrolling for the program Bachelor of Education (Secondary) in Agricultural Science at the Fiji National University (FNU).
“Coming from a farming background I’ve always loved spending time outdoors. I took Agriculture studies in school and was encouraged by my family and former teacher Mohammed Feroz to continue following my passion by joining FNU,” Ms Raiserenivosa said.
“I understand there is a need to engage the younger generation into this vibrant field of study. Therefore, by becoming a teacher, I want to leave a similar impression to my students to get a fresh perspective of dealing with agricultural processes,”she said.
“Agriculture is an important source of livelihood. Although it involves a bit of tough work it contributes to food security and the health of many nations in the world including Fiji.”
Raiserenivosa studied at the Seaqaqa Primary School before progressing to Seaqaqa Central College.
She looks forward to commencing her studies at FNU.
“During the three-year programme at FNU, I hope to learn new skills and knowledge in Agriculture and after I graduate I aim to pass this knowledge to train our future generation of Agriculturalists as well as farmers in the community.”
Raiserenivosa acknowledged the assistance of her siblings for their continued guidance and mentorship.
Her sister Ravaela Raiserenivosa who studied Bachelor of Public Health is a graduate of the Fiji National University while her brother Jioji Raiserenivosa is a third-year student at FNU’s College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism (CBHTS).
“They both talk highly of FNU and no doubt that is what inspired me to join this prestigious university. I look forward to exploring this new adventure where I will be making new friends and learning new things each day,” she mentioned.
“I will miss my parents who are in Vanua Levu and this will be the first time for me to stay far from them, however, I am grateful that I have my siblings in Suva who I can look up to.”
Meanwhile, enrollment for Semester 1 has been extended to 12 March 2021. Students will not be charged any late enrollment fee.
