THE estimated cost of rehabilitation work at the two rundown dormitories at Queen Victoria School in Tailevu is estimated to be more than $3 million.

This was revealed by Education Minister Rosy Akbar after the completion of the scope of the work.

The two dormitories were rebuilt by the Indonesian Government after it was severely damaged by Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016.

The two buildings were earlier closed because windows had missing louvre blades, holes in walls, falling ceiling and exposed electrical wires.

Ms Akbar and Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama visited the school late last month.

“It’s actually very sad that the new dormitories have been reduced to the condition that they are in right now,” Ms Akbar said.

She confirmed that Government intended to rebuild the two dormitories and they were in talks with the Indonesian Government through the Indonesian ambassador to Fiji.

“We have actually done the scope of work. Those dormitories will have to be pulled out.

“We are still talking with the Indonesian Government on the way forward,” Ms Akbar said.

“It’s going to cost well over $3m, it’s a scope of well over $3m.” Ms Akbar said students were now housed in the old dormitories.
