An increasing number of adults in Fiji have contracted typhoid when compared to the other parts of the world, says Professor Kim Mulholland.

The Australian paediatrician is the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute Co-Director of Global Health, with decades of experience in research leading to or evaluating the introduction of new vaccines in the developing.

Prof Mulholland was among medical researchers at the Ministry of Health and Medical Services research symposium at Novotel in Lami yesterday.

“We have seen that adults were among the ones who had typhoid during our seven years of research in Fiji,” he said.

“This is unusual because, in other developing countries, typhoid cases are prevalent in children.”
