Unity, resilience and togetherness.
These were the themes reflected in President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere’s speech to members of Parliament as he opened proceedings for the 2023-2024 Session of Parliament yesterday.
He addressed both sides of the House, making an urgent plea for the healing of divisions in the nation, and also in Parliament. Ratu Wiliame said the past three years were difficult for all, however, Fiji rose to the challenges and demonstrated its resilience as a nation and one people.
“As we grapple with ongoing and emerging challenges, I urge this august House to embody the collective spirit of resilience and resolve of our people,” he said.
“This will bring hope of a promising future for the citizens of our beloved nation, which we all call home. Now, more than ever, we must be united as one nation and strengthen our resolve to work together to meet our collective challenges.
“We must continue to look after each other, especially those less fortunate and the most vulnerable members of our society.”
He also lamented the low voter turnout experienced in the 2022 polls, and called on all Fijians to ensure they were properly registered and make time to vote in the next election.
“I am grateful to note that the change in government has taken place peacefully and swiftly and the new administration has commenced its work with the mandate of the people. I must also acknowledge the contribution and achievements of the previous Government in steering the nation in the past 16 years.”
He congratulated the people’s coalition Government and highlighted the new administration now had the responsibility of leading the nation for the next four years.
