PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says an historic event such as the Courts Inter District Championship needs to be celebrated.

Mr Bainimarama highlighted this while opening the 2018 Courts IDC at Suva’s ANZ Stadium earlier today.

“It is a historic year. The 80th year of the tournament certainly worth celebrating. While rugby is followed by many in the country I don’t think soccer is any less.

“I don’t need to go anywhere to find that out as every afternoon when I walk out of my office I see hundreds of players playing the sport at Albert Park,” he said.

Mr Bainimarama added that his government would continue to support the growth of sports in the country.

He also met with stars of the yesteryear’s national squad including those of the 1988 squad that beat Australia 1-nil at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park.

The PM also stated that he wished to be part of the closing of Courts IDC next Wednesday but will be attending the Fiji Day national celebrations in Labasa.

PM Bainimarama also jokingly said this could be a sign that Labasa might win this year’s IDC.
