THERE is a need to ensure that land and property owners implement good land use practices in order to better protect our roads and other public infrastructure.

Highlighting this, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Jone Usamate said plans were in place to address the threat of landslides and slips. He said a few spots vulnerable to landslides and slips have been identified and these included Lomolomo slip along the Savusavu to Nabouwalu highway, Veisari slip along the Queens highway, Dilkusha slip along the Princes Road and the Kasavu slip along the Kings highway Mitigation measures, he said, have been implemented as part of the remedial rehabilitation work in these areas,” Mr Usamate said.

“These measures are important in ensuring the safety of the general public when travelling along these roads.

“Some of these measures include the construction of the retaining walls, installation of temporary bailey bridges, single lane traffic and most importantly the identification of alternative routes within these affected areas.”

He clarified that the identification and proactive management of landslides was a continuous process.

“Predicting a slip or a landslide and acting on such assertion is costly and uneconomical therefore the focus of mitigation is on areas where detection and probability for the occurrence of a landslide or slip is high.”

And to support the work on early detection, the Fiji Roads Authority has engaged technical teams to conduct soil surveys and topography and slope stability surveys along some of the major highways in the country.

“These assessments are vital in supporting the identification of priority focus areas and development of the relevant work programs by the FRA,” he said.
