THE 2019 pigeon shooting will start from May 26 to June 14 this year, in accordance with Section 5 of the Birds and Game Protection Act Cap 170.

Fiji’s Minister for Agriculture Dr Mahendra Reddy says it is stipulated under Section 9 Subsection (1), (2) and (3) that every person intending to kill or take game during this opening season should carry a valid ‘License to Kill or Take Game’ for 2019.

“The license should be carried at all times and produced on demand whilst engaged in killing or taking game. Game rangers will be present to monitor and penalise offenders who fail to comply with the Birds and Game Protection Act,” Mr Reddy said.

There are reserved areas within which it is unlawful for any person to shoot, capture, take or destroy or attempt to shoot, capture, take or destroy pigeons.

The Ministry of Agriculture will also review to determine the extent of killing and taking of game through a campaign to monitor and maintain the bird population for the protection of biodiversity and the environment.
