Heavy rain overnight has delayed critical repair works on a major Water Authority of Fiji trunk main supplying the greater Suva area, with authorities now targeting midday today for completion.
The Water Authority of Fiji confirmed that repair works on the DN 600 trunk main between the Waila Water Treatment Plant and the Wainibuku Reservoir had been progressing on schedule until midnight.
However, persistent overnight rainfall and worsening ground conditions at the repair site caused delays to the operation.
WAF said the repair area had become heavily waterlogged and soggy, making conditions more difficult for workers and contractors on-site.
“The new anticipated timeframe for completion of repair works is now scheduled for 12pm midday today,” the authority said in a statement.
WAF said additional precautions were necessary to ensure repairs met required quality standards while also protecting the health and safety of workers operating under challenging weather conditions.
Despite the delays, the authority said around 60 per cent inflow to the Wainibuku Reservoir and other dependent reservoirs was still being maintained because two out of the three trunk mains between Waila and Wainibuku remained operational.
Customers in affected areas may continue to experience low water pressure and intermittent water supply until repairs and restoration works are completed.
WAF said efforts were continuing to expedite the repair process and restore normal water supply services within the revised timeframe, subject to weather and site conditions.
